Using Pre-Paid Credit Cards for College Students

College students generally do not have much of a credit history before heading off to school. This can make it difficult to receive a credit card, which is unfortunate because college students often need the convenience of a card when it comes to purchasing books and other supplies.

So, what is a parent to do? A parent could co-sign for a credit card and hope his or her child does not spend over the limit or spend irresponsibly. Or, a parent can get a pre-paid card for the college student. With a prepaid credit card, the parent can essentially provide the college with an allowance from a remote location. In addition, the parent can place emergency funds on the card – usually on the same day.

Prepaid credit cards are also a good idea for college students because it helps prevent creating an insurmountable debt. With traditional credit cards, the college student can spiral out of control in regard to spending. With a prepaid credit card, on the other hand, the student can only spend as much money as what is placed on the card. In this way, both the parent and the student are protected while the student still enjoys the convenience a credit card provides.
